Most free and premium Joomla templates come with documentation and you can easily find out which are the available module positions. What if you find a nice template for your website, but that does not has any support from the developer. I usually don’t recommend using such templates, but it is your choice of course. This tutorial will show you how to find the module positions of any Joomla template.
Login to the administration panel of your website and go to Extensions > Templates.
On the Templates page, access the “Options”. This button is located at the top right side of the screen (in Joomla 3.4.4 – it might change in future versions).
On the Options page, enable the “Preview Module Positions” parameter and hit the save button.
Now go the the front-page of your website and type in “?tp=1” after the website URL in the browser. Just like in the image below:
By accessing the above mentioned URL, all module positions will be display. It may look a bit strange, because these boxes will overlap the content of your website, but at least you will figure out what the module positions are.
For instance, the “protostar” template is displaying the menu module on “position-1”. The left and right sidebars are displayed on “position-8” and “position-7”. Each template is different, so the name of the module positions can vary from template to template.
So this is the easiest and quest way to find the module position of any Joomla template. If you have any questions or suggestions, please let us know in the comment section.
