Joomla! 3.8 has brought a few new features into the game. The new sites are capable of supporting the new router and its URLs. As a result, the new admins can enjoy a more flexible interface that allows the easy creation and processing of URLs. The end users receive more options since the search engines and the new router from Joomla! 3.8 relate to the URL display system. Right now, it is possible for any user to set up the router configuration in any of the three given configurations –

  • The new routing system that does not include the content Ids.
  • The new routing system without any changes in the URLs.
  • The old (current) routing system that remains the default choice for all new installation, until further intervention by the website admin.

In case of the former URL, you will notice the numbers 99 before the “article-alias” tag. It refers to the article ID number. Nonetheless, 99 has little meaning to the human user and the exceedingly humanized search engine bots. The latter sample of an equivalent URL is from the new 3.8 routing system. The new routing system removes the article ID number, and that results in cleaner and more human-friendly URLs.

Why does Joomla take so much effort to introduce new updates?

Google has a strict preference for cleaner URLs that are legible and understandable. Therefore, websites with complex URLs with a lot of IDs, serial numbers, and random characters do not find space easily on the front page of the SRL.   • To enable new URLs just log into your Administrator account with Joomla.
  • Then select Content and Articles.

  • Select “Yes” against Remove IDs from URLs option.
  • Do not forget to save before closing.

Interestingly, all Joomla! 3.8 users can now enable this feature for their Articles, News Feeds, Users, and Contacts. Follow the same steps after going to the “Options” and “Integration” tab for each case.

Although we have been waiting for this new URL feature for quite a long time, it is not yet perfect for the older versions of Joomla. It is not a compulsory update. You can use your current (old) URL version with confidence as well.
